The Maya and the chocolate gift

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow History scheme of work. It introduces pupils to an ancient Maya creation story that explains how the Maya came to discover and use chocolate. Pupils learn about the Ceiba tree, known as the Tree of Life, and the important gods in Maya beliefs, including Kukulkan, the feathered serpent, and Ixchel, the goddess of the moon.

The story describes how Kukulkan gifted cacao pods to the Maya people and how Ixchel taught them to prepare the special chocolate drink in a dream. Pupils discover how the Maya valued chocolate, using it in rituals and celebrations. This engaging narrative helps pupils explore the beliefs, agriculture, and daily life of the ancient Maya civilisation.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Mixed-age, New for 24/25: Y3/4 (B): How did the achievements of the ancient Maya impact their society and beyond? Y3/4 (B): Lesson 2: How important was chocolate to the ancient Maya?
