The importance of observation
This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to the importance of observation, helping them develop essential drawing skills by looking closely and drawing what they truly see.
Observation in art is like being a detective. It means looking carefully and noticing details—shapes, colours, textures, tones and how something looks from different angles. Pupils are encouraged to draw from observation rather than memory, which helps them capture the real appearance of what’s in front of them. The video helps children explore how different marks can show different textures. Pupils are reminded to take their time before they begin drawing. By starting with simple shapes to map out the object, they can then focus on smaller details and texture. The video encourages repeated looking, helping children understand that careful observation improves their drawings.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Developing drawing skills unit. It supports children in developing accuracy, confidence and artistic awareness through focused observation.
