Making stained glass artwork

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils as they turn sections of their map drawings into colourful abstract artworks that resemble stained glass.

Pupils begin by exploring how artists sometimes use maps for inspiration, even if the final artwork doesn’t look like a map at all. They choose an interesting section of their map using a viewfinder. Once they’ve chosen a section, they prepare to recreate it as a stained glass-inspired collage. Pupils look closely at the shapes in their chosen section, thinking about how to simplify tricky areas so they’re easier to cut. Using materials like tissue paper or cellophane, pupils cut shapes and arrange them on a background, trying out different placements before sticking them down. Children can experiment with overlapping colours or cutting out small details from within larger pieces.

Once complete, individual artworks can be combined to create a large collaborative abstract piece, like a stained glass jigsaw.
