Seeing the world around us

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. Our senses tell us what’s happening around us: we see with our eyes, hear with our ears, taste with our tongues, feel with our skin, and smell with our noses. These body parts send signals to our brain to give us information about the world. For example, your tongue tastes something sweet, your ears hear a crunch, and your eyes see something small, white, and fluffy – it’s popcorn! Eyes can detect shapes, patterns, colours, movement, and whether it’s light or dark.

Some people wear glasses to help them see better, while others may be visually impaired or blind and use other senses to understand their surroundings. They might have guide dogs, use a cane, or read braille with their fingers. Technology is also helping, with computers and phones that read text aloud or describe surroundings, and even tiny cameras placed on the eye to improve sight. Eyesight helps us enjoy the beauty of the world every day, from recognising loved ones to reading a favourite book.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Key stage 1, Year 1, Animals: Sensitive bodies, Lesson 4: Sight and smell
