Continuing shape portraits

This Art and design scheme of work video helps pupils build on their shape portrait drawings by practising light sketching and even colouring techniques.

Children start with their drawing from the last lesson and trace the shapes with their finger before sketching. It models how to draw lightly with a pencil so that lines can be easily changed or rubbed out. It also shows what can happen if pupils press too hard or rush, encouraging a slow and careful approach. Once the portrait shapes are drawn, children will begin to focus on colouring skills.

When colouring, pupils are reminded to hold their pencil to the side, not the tip, and to colour in one direction with even pressure, leaving no gaps. These steps help keep their work neat and well controlled.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Exploring line and shape unit.
