Drawing on the papyrus

This Art and design scheme of work video shows pupils how to draw their Egyptian-themed message onto the handmade papyrus-style paper they created in the last lesson.

Pupils begin by revisiting their final design in their sketchbook and thinking carefully about how to transfer it to their papyrus sheet. Since the sizes may not match exactly, they should plan by lightly sketching or marking out simple shapes to guide their layout. Before starting, pupils check which materials they’ll use to complete their scroll and then begin drawing the full design, adding colour and pattern as planned. Throughout the activity, they are reminded to refer back to their sketchbook and take care with their colouring or painting.

Once the artwork is finished and dry, it’s time to turn the decorated paper into a scroll. Pupils can roll it carefully with the design on the inside and tie it with string or ribbon, or glue the ends to painted cardboard tubes.
