Exploring coastal mini habitats

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores the fascinating world of rock pools – tiny coastal habitats teeming with life. The video introduces pupils to the plants and animals that live in these microhabitats, such as seaweed, shellfish, and carnivorous predators, and explains how they adapt to survive the ever-changing environment caused by tides, sun, and temperature.

Pupils learn how different creatures use suckers, shells, and hiding spots for protection, and how food chains in rock pools include herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. The video encourages children to explore rock pools respectfully, returning any creatures or rocks to their original spots and avoiding littering, helping to protect these delicate and important ecosystems.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Mixed-age, Y1/2 (A): Making connections: Ocean protectors, Y1/2 (A): Lesson 1: Rockpooling
