Solar system msodels

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores how scientists have tried to understand the movement of celestial bodies throughout history. Pupils will learn about early observations of the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets moving across the sky, which led ancient astronomers like Ptolemy to develop the geocentric model, placing Earth at the centre of the Solar System. The video explains how later discoveries, including unusual movements of planets, led to the heliocentric model, with the Sun at the centre. Pupils will be introduced to scientists like Alhazen and Copernicus, whose work helped change our understanding of space. The video shows how evidence and tools like telescopes and maths have helped shape scientific thinking over time.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, key stage 2, Year 5, Forces and space: Earth and space, Lesson 1: Models of our Solar System
