Making prehistoric paintings

In this Art and design scheme of work video, pupils explore how natural materials can be used to create colour and texture, like prehistoric artists may have done.

Children begin by experimenting with the natural objects they’ve collected, trying out ways to make marks on paper. They will try adding water to release colour, and they’re encouraged to label which materials they’ve used and decide which ones work best. Next, they’ll learn how to make their own paint using a simple paste of flour and water. By adding pigments such as spices or charcoal, they can create a palette of earthy colours. To finish, children create their own cave wall by spreading glue over strong cardboard, sprinkling grains or lentils, and then painting it with their handmade paint.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Prehistoric painting unit. helping children explore traditional materials in creative ways.
