Creating poem self-portraits

This Art and design scheme of work video helps pupils create a unique self-portrait using both drawing and poetry

Children will begin by drawing a portrait of themselves using a photo or mirror. They use a continuous line technique, keeping their pencil on the page as they outline their features, including key shapes, shadows and details.  Once the line drawing is complete, a sheet of tracing paper is placed over the top. Pupils then rewrite their poem, following the lines of their drawing with their writing. They can repeat words or phrases, layer the poem, or write it more than once to build rhythm and visual interest.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Portraits unit. Children will explore self-expression through drawing and poetry to create thoughtful self-portraits.
