Mixing primary colours

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils as they explore colour mixing by painting bold number shapes using primary and secondary colours.

Pupils begin by drawing the numbers 0 to 9 in boxes on a large sheet of A3 paper. Using the primary colours, they paint inside each number, working with one colour at a time. Next, they mix the primary colours to create secondary colours. These new colours are used to paint the background areas around the numbers.

The video introduces the painting technique called impasto, where thick layers of paint are applied to the surface. Pupils are encouraged to use plenty of paint and keep their brushstrokes going in the same direction for a smoother effect. As they paint, they’re reminded to work slowly and carefully, especially when painting near wet areas, to avoid the colours running into each other.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Colour splash unit. It supports children in understanding colour theory while building confidence in brush control and technique.
