Mummify a tomato!
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow History scheme of work. It explores how the ancient Egyptians prepared people for the afterlife by learning about the process of mummification in a fun, hands-on way using a tomato! Egyptians believed that after death, the soul lived on in a paradise-like afterlife, and the body had to be preserved so the soul and body could be reunited.
You’ll discover how Egyptians removed organs, used a special salt called natron, and wrapped the body in linen. In this activity, you’ll scoop out a tomato, clean it like an embalmer, fill it with your own natron mixture, and wrap it up like a real mummy. You’ll learn how mummification helped preserve the body in Egypt’s hot climate and why items like amulets were added for protection. Just like a real ancient embalmer, you’ll check on your tomato mummy each week to see how it’s doing on its journey to the afterlife!
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of History, Lower key stage 2, Year 3, *New* What was important to ancient Egyptians? Lesson 5: What did people in Ancient Egypt believe happened after death?
