Build a simple mechanical car

This Design and technology scheme of work video is part of a Year 4 unit and shows the children how to build a simple mechanical car using basic materials. The video demonstrates how to cut a straw and dowel to create the car’s structure and axles, then attach wheels using small pieces of tubing. The dowels are inserted through the straw to allow smooth wheel movement.

The children are guided to construct a V-shaped frame using lolly sticks, which is fixed securely to the axles. Once complete, the car is tested on a ramp to observe how far it can travel. This hands-on activity supports the children in understanding wheel and axle mechanisms through practical exploration and simple testing.
