Making our own papyrus paper

This Art and design scheme of work video shows pupils how to create their own version of papyrus paper, using the same layering technique as the Ancient Egyptians, using modern materials.

Pupils begin by tearing paper into strips. Each strip is dipped into a pot of watered-down glue to coat it fully and the excess glue is squeezed off. The strip is then laid vertically on a backing surface, slightly overlapping the next strip to build a solid base. Once the first layer is complete, they repeat the process to add a second layer, laying the strips horizontally across the first. The two layers should overlap to help the finished paper stay strong and textured. When finished, the paper is left to dry completely. The result is a papyrus-style sheet, ready for pupils to use in future art lessons.
