Pupil video: Making a chair for a bear

Applying knowledge of strong shapes and stiff materials

In this Design and technology video, the pupils are guided through several possible methods to make legs from paper for a chair for a bear; they are then guided through possible methods to attach these to a cardboard seat.

The pupils are shown a range of methods for constructing a paper and card chair for a teddy bear. The video allows the pupils to consider the strongest possible shape for the legs and then outlines several potential methods for attaching them to a cardboard seat for the chair. Finally, the pupils see different possible ways to make a back for the chair. At each step of the construction, they are encouraged to consider the advantages or disadvantages of the other methods.

The video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
