Making abstract sculpture

This Art and design scheme of work video shows how pupils will create their own abstract sculptures. They will use their sketchbook plans as a starting point and adapt their ideas as they build.

The video begins by encouraging pupils to look back at their drawings and think about the materials they’ll need. They’re reminded that artists often change their minds while working, and problem-solving is part of the creative process. Pupils organise their workspace and gather the tools they’ll need for cutting and joining. They start by making the largest part of their sculpture. They will think about how to keep shapes simple and how to turn flat card into 3D forms. The video suggests a range of techniques to do this.

As they work in pairs or small groups, they’re reminded to communicate and collaborate. Once complete, they view their sculpture from all sides and think about how it changes depending on the angle.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Abstract shape and space unit. It helps children build, adapt and create with confidence.
