Measuring wind with sound

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores how wind strength affects sound levels through a practical investigation. The video demonstrates how to set up a fair test using a wind source and a decibel meter, and guides pupils in measuring and recording the volume of gentle, medium, and strong winds.

Pupils are encouraged to conduct repeated tests for reliable data and to identify any anomalies in their results. The activity supports the development of key scientific skills, including measuring sound, maintaining consistent variables, recording in tables, and analysing data for patterns.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Mixed-age, Y3/4 (B): Making connections: How does wind force affect seed dispersal?, Y3/4 (B): Lesson 4: Investigating seed dispersal – Extending
