Investigating plastic in water

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and introduces an investigation into the effects of ocean litter. Pupils follow a simple experiment to explore how different types of litter react in water over time. By placing pieces of labelled litter in bottles, adding water, shaking them, and observing any changes immediately and after a week, pupils begin to understand how some materials may break down while others remain unchanged.

The investigation encourages curiosity about environmental science and prompts pupils to think critically about the impact of human waste on marine habitats. Through observation and comparison, pupils learn how litter affects ocean ecosystems and are inspired to consider the importance of reducing pollution to protect marine life.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Mixed-age, Y1/2 (A): Making connections: Ocean protectors, Y1/2 (A): Lesson 3: Ocean litter
