Learning about MakeCode

This Computing scheme of work video introduces Year 2 pupils to MakeCode, an exciting online platform where they can build and run their own code using simple blocks. It guides the children through getting started, creating a project and understanding how code works with the micro:bit.

The video walks the children through opening MakeCode, finding the My projects section to start new work and using Tutorials for extra help and inspiration. It explains the layout of the editor, including the coding area, block menu and micro:bit simulator, while also showing what a real micro:bit looks like. The children are guided step by step through building their first program using the ‘on start’ block and the ‘show icon block to display a smiley face. Along the way, they learn how to delete blocks, run code and download or save their finished program. This video helps the children become confident young coders, ready to explore, experiment and create their own exciting digital projects in Computing.
