Drawing houses from observation

In this Art and design scheme of work video, pupils learn how to draw a house from observation. They will focus on proportion, detail and careful looking.

The video begins by guiding children to lightly sketch the outline shape of the house. They’re reminded to think about how the whole building will fit on the page, and to use a soft pencil tone so they can easily make changes. Next, pupils add windows and doors, using measuring techniques to help get the size and spacing right. Through this, they will develop their understanding of proportion. Once the main structure is in place, pupils go over their lines with more confidence, and will add extra features. They’re encouraged to work slowly and draw only what they can see, not what they think should be there.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Architecture unit.
