Creating a cave wall painting

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in creating textured, cave-inspired backgrounds using simple painting techniques.

Pupils begin by using earth-toned paints to build texture on paper, using tools like sponges, rags or brushes to apply and flick diluted paint. Once dry, they work in pairs to explore positive and negative handprints, inspired by prehistoric art. The video demonstrates how to create a positive print by dipping a hand into paint and pressing it firmly onto the surface. It then models the negative print technique, using a clean hand as a stencil and sponging around it to leave a hand-shaped outline.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Prehistoric painting unit. It assists with the delivery of a practical, engaging lesson where children learn how early humans may have expressed themselves through art. With clear visual guidance and opportunities for creativity and collaboration, the video builds confidence in delivering hands-on art techniques.
