The force of gravity

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and introduces the scientific discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton, focusing on the invisible force of gravity. The video begins with the famous story of Newton observing an apple fall, sparking his curiosity about why objects always fall toward the ground.

Pupils learn Newton’s key ideas about gravity: that all objects pull on each other, the strength of this pull increases with mass, and it’s stronger when objects are closer. The video also connects Newton’s work to earlier discoveries by Galileo, including the idea that all objects fall at the same rate in the absence of air. Pupils explore how gravity affects everything – from falling apples to jumping, orbiting planets, and ocean tides – making this invisible force essential to life on Earth and beyond.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Upper key stage 2, Year 5, Forces and space: Unbalanced forces, Lesson 1: Gravity
