Making a giant spider model

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in working collaboratively to create a giant spider sculpture, inspired by Louise Bourgeois’s artwork ‘Maman’.

In small groups, pupils begin by rolling large sheets of newspaper tightly from one corner to the other. Each tube is secured at the end with masking tape. Pupils make several of these rolls to use to make spider legs. Each group aims to make two or more legs until there are eight in. Next, pupils roll more tubes to form the spider’s body. Ten tubes are joined tightly together to create one body section, then the process is repeated to make the second section, representing the thorax and abdomen. The video then shows how to arrange and secure these parts, before carefully attaching the legs in four matching pairs.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Paper play unit. It supports teamwork, construction skills and creativity.
