Making drawings into prints
This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces pupils to the technique of lino printing (also called linocut), guiding them through the process of turning a memory drawing into a striking relief print.
Pupils learn about the artist Elizabeth Catlett and how she used lino printing to tell powerful stories through bold shapes and expressive lines. The video explains how this technique works — carving into a surface to create raised areas that hold ink — and shows how the carved lines remain white while the uncut areas print the image.
The process begins with tracing a drawing to map out main features for transfer. Pupils are encouraged to think carefully about what will be inked and what will stay blank, developing their understanding of positive and negative space in printmaking.
This video is a creative and practical introduction to relief printing, helping pupils experiment with texture, line, and visual storytelling.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Drawing: Depth, emotion and movement unit. It helps children develop key printmaking skills and build confidence in using tools and techniques to share personal ideas through their artwork.
