Making drawings into prints
This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces pupils to lino printing, a type of printmaking where raised surfaces are inked and pressed to create an image.
Pupils learn about the printmaking process, including how to use a lino-style material—often a polymer or polystyrene tile—making it accessible for classroom use. Inspired by Elizabeth Catlett’s prints, pupils will transfer their memory drawings into bold print designs using strong lines and texture to tell a story.
They’ll use tracing paper to simplify their drawings into key shapes and lines ready for carving or pressing into their printing plate. The video helps pupils visualise how positive and negative space works in relief printmaking.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Drawing: Depth, emotion and movement unit. It helps children develop key printmaking skills and build confidence in using tools and techniques to share personal ideas through their artwork.
