Understanding floods and their impact

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores the natural phenomenon of flooding (when large amounts of water cover dry land). The video explains the different causes of floods, such as heavy rainfall, melting ice, and broken dams, and the wide-ranging effects they can have on both land and living things.

Pupils learn how floods can wash away plants, soil, and food sources, destroy animal habitats, and spread disease. However, the video also shows how floods can bring positive changes, such as enriching the soil with nutrients and creating new habitats. Through engaging visuals and rhythmic narration, the video helps pupils understand the impact of flooding on environments and ecosystems.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, key stage 2, Year 4, Living things: Classification and changing habitats, Lesson 6: Natural changes to habitats
