Earthquakes and their impact

This Geography video introduces Key stage 2 pupils to earthquakes, explaining how the movement of tectonic plates can cause the ground to shake. It explores what earthquakes are, how seismic waves spread from the focus and why the epicentre is where the shaking is strongest. Pupils also learn how underwater earthquakes can trigger tsunamis and the different ways earthquakes can impact people, landscapes and infrastructure.

The video highlights both the dangers of earthquakes, including landslides, collapsing buildings and flooding, and the safety measures that can reduce their impact such as earthquake drills, specially designed buildings and seismometers that provide early warnings.

This video simplifies complex processes, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to guide children in understanding earthquakes and how communities adapt to living with them.
