Celebrating day of the dead
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It explores Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a special celebration from Central America where people remember and honour those who have died. It shows how ancient beliefs and Catholic traditions came together to create a colourful festival full of meaning.
Families prepare altars called ofrendas, decorate graves with flowers and candles, and leave out favourite food and photos to welcome the spirits of loved ones back for a short visit. People also wear bright costumes, share music and stories, and celebrate with joy instead of sadness. This tradition teaches that remembering those who have died can bring people together and help them value love, family and the gift of life.
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, Upper key stage 2, Year 5, What happens when we die? (Part 1) Lesson 6: How do some people remember those who have died?
