Working on memory drawings

This Art and Design scheme of work video supports pupils in developing their memory drawings by focusing on composition and detail across the foreground, middle ground and background.

Pupils will be guided to enhance the foreground with bold, textured lines and visual interest to bring it closer to the viewer. They’ll learn how to simplify detail in the middle ground while possibly placing a focal point here to direct attention. For the background, children are encouraged to keep details softer to create a sense of distance.

Using a variety of lines, patterns and shading, pupils will explore how to add texture, light and contrast to bring their compositions to life. They’ll also consider how the viewer’s eye moves across the artwork and use mark making to support this visual journey.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Drawing: Depth, emotion and movement unit. It helps children refine their drawing techniques, understand composition and communicate meaning through their artwork.
