Designing a clay tile
This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils as they create a drawing that will be used to make a three-dimensional clay house tile in the next lesson.
The finished piece will be shaped like a house, with some features joined on in relief, and others pressed in to create texture and detail.
Children begin by studying pictures of different homes. They’ll look closely at the shapes, patterns and textures they can see and begin thinking about how to represent those features in clay. The video models how to plan each part of the house. Children then draw their design, showing what they want their clay house to look like. They label which features will be joined on and which will be impressed into the surface. This design stage gives pupils time to think, plan and build confidence before working with clay.
