Exploring shade through colour mixing

This Art and design scheme of work video helps teachers support pupils in developing their painting skills by mixing primary colours to explore shade.

The video begins by reviewing colour mixing, and how the shade of colours can be adjusted. Children are encouraged to experiment and test their mixes first. Next, they’ll apply these shades in a painting activity. Pupils will draw around a hand and paint each finger section with a different green. In the palm area, children use their mixed greens to decorate with small patterns – zigzags, dots, wavy lines and more.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Colour splash unit.
