Mixed-media self-portraits
In this Art and Design scheme of work video, pupils will consider a range of mixed media techniques, helping them plan and experiment with ideas for their self-portraits.
Children are encouraged to think about the effect they want their portrait to have on the viewer. They consider their composition, whether to use all or part of their photo, what other materials to include and what message their portrait will communicate about themselves.
The video models a range of creative techniques. Pupils are invited to use leftover prints, experiment with unusual combinations and respond to features in their photo background. There are no fixed outcomes. Instead, children will be given the opportunity to try new things, explore ideas and have fun. This process will support the development of a final self-portrait in a later lesson.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Portraits unit, designed to build confidence and facilitate creativity through experimentation.
