Using artefacts to inspire historical enquiry

In this History video, teachers are supported to use artefacts as a stimulating and interactive way to help the children investigate the past and develop historical enquiry skills.

The video explains that artefacts can be any object from the past, from Roman coins and historical diaries to teddy bears, and shows how they can spark curiosity about the people and societies that created and used them. Teachers see how comparing artefacts with modern objects strengthens understanding of continuity and change, with practical ideas such as class ‘pass the object’ activities. Guidance is offered on asking open-ended questions and sourcing suitable artefacts, ensuring safe handling and thoughtful selection to support confident and purposeful historical learning.

This teacher video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills videos, designed to build teachers’ confidence and skills in developing the children’s enquiry and understanding of everyday life in the past.
