Using artefacts in the classroom

This History scheme of work video supports teachers in using artefacts as a stimulating and interactive way to help pupils investigate the past and develop historical enquiry skills. It explains that artefacts can be any object from the past — from Roman coins and historical diaries to teddy bears — and shows how they can spark curiosity about the people and societies that created and used them.

The video demonstrates how comparing and contrasting artefacts with modern objects builds pupils’ understanding of continuity and change. A range of practical ideas are provided for incorporating artefacts into the classroom, such as class ‘pass the object’ activities. Teachers are encouraged to ask open-ended questions about physical characteristics, design, function, and value, and to use artefacts to introduce new historical periods or make links between them.

The video also advises on sourcing artefacts, such as borrowing boxes (including replicas) from local museums or libraries and involving families who can contribute relevant and safe-to-handle personal objects. Emphasis is placed on careful handling and ensuring items are appropriate for historical learning.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History Artefact teacher videos, designed to develop pupils’ enquiry skills and understanding of everyday life in the past.
