Our sustainability journey

At Kapow Primary, we recognise our responsibility to minimise our environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. From how we run our business to the resources we create for teachers and children, sustainability informs our decisions every step of the way.

Sustainability is at the heart of Kapow Primary. It’s woven throughout our subject curriculums and is also a key focus in our company’s operations.

People

  • Many of the team work remotely; others are offered hybrid working.
  • The central London office is well served by public transport routes.
  • For visits to schools and other venues, we minimise travel by sending the nearest team members and using public transport whenever possible.
  • Occasional office days for remote workers are held in venues easily accessible by public transport.
  • The team can join Cyclescheme to buy discounted bikes and reduce their carbon footprint.
  • A dedicated sustainability group meets regularly to work on ways to continue with our efforts.
  • The team participates in sustainability challenges to reduce carbon footprints and develop greener lifestyles.
  • Our curriculum team has participated in a discussion on Embedding sustainability in primary education on Teachers Talk Radio.

Planet

  • The London office is in a Runway East venue, a B Corp company. The office is powered exclusively by green energy; it uses 100% renewable energy and a green server. All our servers are carbon neutral.
  • The Kapow Primary website is hosted by the UK’s leading green data centre. It uses 100% renewable green energy and is certified by the Green Web Foundation.

Product

  • Resources are online and paperless by design, so there is no transportation or delivery of goods and equipment.
  • The digital format of resources allows us to keep printing requirements to a minimum. As resources are developed, we are adding more sustainable printing suggestions, such as:

    • One between two or one per group.
    • Keeping printables for future lessons.
    • Using whiteboards and pens.
    • Offering non-printable options where possible and encouraging working in books.
  • The whole school Sustainability lesson collection and Progression document support teaching on sustainability and climate change.
  • Our Eco-Schools mapping document shows which lessons link to each of the Eco-Schools’ ten topics.
  • Our Sustainability webinar provides practical suggestions for how schools can embed sustainability.
  • Lessons encourage using sustainable resources and materials, such as reusing equipment for Science experiments, making models using recycling in Art and design and using biodegradable materials for Design and technology.
