Recap and recall
Before starting this unit, check that the children can recall: Stable structures do not topple over easily. Structures with wide bases are more stable than those with narrow bases. Placing weight near the bottom of a structure helps it to be more stable. Strong materials can be helpful when building structures. Shell structures are hollow…

Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support:
- Could highlight the constraints or aims of the playground design challenge by using the Resource: Playground design challenge audio transcript during the Attention grabber to reduce the need to make notes and retain information from the audio description.
- Could use the Resource: Sorting structures to tick off each question as they work through the flow chart, helping them keep track of their decisions.
- Could use the Activity: Pictures of structures: support version to sort a reduced number of examples, supporting accurate identification of structure types.
- Could sketch one or two ideas instead of three to focus on meeting the constraints clearly, rather than producing multiple designs.
- Could use the pre-cut Activity: Diamond nine to sort the constraints during the Wrapping up.
- Could sort fewer constraints in the diamond nine activity, focusing on safe, cost, sustainable, enjoyable and inclusive.
Pupils working at greater depth:
- Should suggest additional real-world structures that fit each structure type to extend their classification thinking.
- Should explain why they are prioritising particular constraints in each sketch by linking design features to those constraints.
