Lesson plan

Recap and recall

Explain that the children will look at different product packaging and decide which item could be the odd one out and why. Display the Presentation: Odd one out and arrange the children in pairs. Ask them to discuss which picture is the odd one out and why.

Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing extra support

Should use Resource: Types of snacks (support) help select a suitable healthy snack and match it with an appropriate 3D shape before designing their net, ensuring they meet the design criteria; could use the Resource: 3D shapes (support) to choose a 3D shape that fits their snack and refer to when copying or adapting the net on Sketchpad; could use the square on Download: Cube net (support) and duplicate it to construct an accurate cube net, reducing the complexity of drawing from scratch.

Pupils working at greater depth

Should plan packaging that could accommodate the same snack in different shapes or sizes (for example, a flapjack bar or a flapjack square), explaining how this affects net design and measurements; should justify their choice of shape and material, linking it to protection, sustainability and ease of use, and refer explicitly to real examples; could compare the efficiency of different nets for the same 3D shape (for example, cube nets with different layouts) and explain which one is most effective for card use, folding accuracy or reducing waste.
