Recap and recall

Before starting this unit, check that the children can recall: A mechanism is a set of parts that move together to make something happen. A slider is a mechanism that moves in a straight line in one direction. Many things have parts inside them that help them work.

Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing extra support

  • Should use the Resource: Desk seesaws (support) to help them build their lever, using the picture guide to identify where the lever and pivot should be placed.
  • Could use a shorter ruler or a lighter stick if they find it difficult to balance or coordinate movement, so they can still observe how the pivot changes the lever’s movement.

Pupils working at greater depth

  • Should make comparisons about how the lever moves when the pivot is in different positions.
  • Should begin using the vocabulary lever and pivot contextually to describe other mechanisms they notice.
