This unit has been replaced by the unit *New* Textiles: Simple stitches. It will move to our Content archive in November 2026. It will remain permanently available but will not be updated in line with curriculum or website developments.

 

This unit’s theme is based on the children choosing a storybook character to base their puppet designs on. For guidance on adapting the unit to the theme ‘Easter animals’, please visit the alternative theme page here.

Unit outcomes

Pupils who are secure will be able to:

  • Join fabrics together using pins, staples or glue.
  • Design a puppet and use a template.
  • Join their two puppets’ faces together as one.
  • Decorate a puppet to match their design.

  • becoming very familiar with key stories, fairy stories and traditional tales, retelling them and considering their particular characteristics’

 

Pupils apply their understanding of stories by making puppets based on their favourite characters, integrating creativity with their reading skills in this KS1 puppet-making lesson.
