Should use a limited selection of instruments to simplify their choices, ensuring they can focus on exploring the sounds each can make without feeling overwhelmed; could use a limited range of notes and be given two types of tempo; could give them hints as to what they can give feedback on.

Pupils working at greater depth:

Should explore more complex ideas in their compositions, such as varying the tempo within their piece or using pitch to tell a story; could take on specific roles within their groups, such as a conductor who can direct the tempo and dynamics or a composer who decides the sequence of sounds.
