National curriculum alignment for our Spanish scheme
This resource demonstrates how Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work covers the statutory guidance for KS2.
How does this document support curriculum planning?
The document maps each unit of the scheme to the specific content and aims of the National curriculum for languages. This ensures that every lesson contributes to the spiral progression of skills and knowledge, leading to the attainment of end-of-key-stage targets.
What core Spanish skills and knowledge are covered?
Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work is built around the following six key areas:
- Phonics – becoming familiar with key Spanish phonemes, spelling and pronunciation.
- Vocabulary – introducing commonly-used words; memorising high-frequency keywords.
- Grammar – systematically learning Spanish grammar and applying it in a variety of contexts; practising grammar structures in speaking, writing, reading and listening activities.
- Language comprehension (listening and reading) – applying knowledge of phonics, vocabulary and grammar; decoding what the children hear and read more accurately and efficiently using a range of strategies.
- Language production (speaking and writing) – applying what the children have learnt across other knowledge strands to speak and write in Spanish.
- Cultural awareness – learning about Spanish food, celebrations, festivals, art and Spanish-speaking countries around the world.
What are the benefits of this curriculum mapping for teachers?
This National curriculum mapping document clearly shows which key skills are developed in each unit across the year groups. It ensures a broad and balanced Spanish curriculum, giving children varied experiences with the fundamentals.
Supported by this document, teachers will find clear pathways for Spanish assessment, ensuring consistent tracking of pupil progress.
