National curriculum alignment for our Geography scheme
This resource demonstrates how Kapow Primary’s Geography scheme of work covers the statutory guidance from EYFS (Reception) through to KS1 and KS2.
How does this document support curriculum planning?
The document maps each unit of the scheme to the specific content and aims of the Geography National curriculum. This ensures that every lesson contributes to the spiral progression of skills and knowledge, leading to the attainment of end-of-key-stage targets.
For EYFS, it details alignment with Early Learning Goals and Development Matters statements, providing transition and EYFS Geography guidance.
What core Geography skills and knowledge are covered?
Kapow Primary’s Geography scheme of work is built around the following four key areas:
- Locational knowledge – naming and locating places and features from memory; using atlases, globes and maps.
- Place knowledge – developing a sense of the children’s place in the world; comparing and contrasting geographical areas to understand their characteristics and cultures; learning how places are interconnected and change over time.
- Human and physical geography – understanding the relationship between humans and the environment; exploring the Earth’s natural features and processes; considering the impact of human activity on settlements; learning about land use, trade and natural resources.
- Geography skills and fieldwork – using maps and diagrams; describing location and direction; planning and carrying out fieldwork enquiries.
What are the benefits of this curriculum mapping for teachers?
This National curriculum mapping document clearly shows which key skills are developed in each unit across the year groups. It ensures a broad and balanced Geography curriculum, giving children varied experiences with the fundamentals.
Supported by this document, teachers will find clear pathways for Geography assessment, ensuring consistent tracking of pupil progress.
