Building form

This Art and design video supports Year 4 pupils in developing their understanding of how tone can make objects appear three-dimensional. Children learn to look closely at an object and identify highlights, shadows and midtones before making decisions about where to place different tones in their own painted studies.

The video guides pupils through a practical activity using a range of grey shades. Children begin with one shade before gradually adding more tones, helping them observe how different combinations of light, dark and midtones can change the appearance of an object.

Pupils are encouraged to pause, reflect and adapt their work as they go, considering which tonal choices make the object look most realistic and three-dimensional. This helps develop careful observation, decision-making and confidence in using tone purposefully.

This video supports Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Painting and mixed media: Light and dark unit and helps children build the skills needed to use highlights, shadows and midtones to create form in their paintings.
