Exploring money, wants and needs in Year 2

This RSE & PSHE scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering the Year 2 economic well-being unit, helping pupils to build on their early understanding of money, work, and financial awareness. It explains how children learn where money comes from, including earning through jobs as well as receiving benefits or gifts, while developing the ability to distinguish between wants and needs.

The video emphasises the importance of creating a supportive environment when discussing money, recognising that children’s awareness of family financial circumstances can vary. Teachers are encouraged to foster safe spaces for speaking and listening so that all pupils feel comfortable sharing their ideas. To support teaching of wants and needs, the video introduces Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, outlining how physical well-being, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualisation are all essential for a child’s growth and success.

Later lessons connect money with the world of work, encouraging children to consider the range of jobs adults can do to earn an income. The unit promotes inclusion, equality, and diversity, helping pupils to recognise that different roles are open to everyone. Key texts are recommended to support these discussions and highlight the importance of tolerance, acceptance, and empathy in both school and workplace contexts.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE – economic wellbeing teacher videos. designed to build financial awareness, promote inclusive values, and support children in developing confidence around money and work.
