Understanding beliefs about suffering

This Religion and worldviews video supports teachers delivering a unit that explores the big questions: How and why are we here? and How do worldviews affect our lives? Children investigate beliefs and scripture from Christian, Jewish and Zoroastrian perspectives to explore different ideas about suffering, free will and hope. Key concepts include the causes of suffering, the role of personal choice, and the ways belief in God or the lack of supernatural intervention influence responses to difficult situations. Stories such as Adam and Eve, Noah, and Job, along with personal reflections and teachings, help children interpret diverse worldviews and develop their own responses.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews resources – suffering. It prepares teachers to guide sensitive discussions around suffering and its place in different belief systems. The video addresses common misconceptions, such as the idea that only bad people suffer or that suffering is always a punishment, and supports teachers in creating an inclusive classroom where children feel safe to share. Practical strategies are provided for adapting lessons to reflect the local community and incorporating visitors or personal responses. Children are supported in developing empathy and critical thinking while learning to respect the diversity of beliefs and responses to life’s challenges.
