Women at work in World War II
This History video supports teachers in delivering a lesson that highlights the crucial role women played during the Second World War. With millions of men fighting overseas, women stepped into roles traditionally held by men, from engineering and farming to military support and intelligence work. The children explore how women contributed to the war effort, the challenges they faced and how their work influenced perceptions of gender roles at the time.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Second World War resources. It provides guidance for analysing a wide range of contributions, from the Women’s Land Army to codebreaking at Bletchley Park and offers practical support for historical enquiry using diverse sources. Teachers are supported in leading discussions on women’s experiences, their legacy and the long-term impact of wartime work on society and women’s rights.
