AI Unit overview
This Computing scheme of work overview video introduces teachers to the Artificial Intelligence unit, designed to help Key Stage 2 pupils explore the core concepts of AI and its growing role in the modern world. It provides a clear overview of the unit’s purpose, structure and key teaching points, helping teachers feel confident in delivering this topical and forward-thinking content.
The unit contains five lessons, each focusing on a different aspect of AI. Pupils will engage in hands-on activities, interactive presentations and guided discussions to explore how AI is used in everyday life—from virtual assistants and image generation to code creation. Ethical questions around fairness, bias and the limits of AI are also introduced, helping children develop critical digital literacy skills.
This unit sits within the ‘Computer Networks and Systems’ strand of Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work. Prior learning on computer networks and search engines, especially from Year 5, provides a helpful foundation for understanding how AI systems operate.
The video also addresses key misconceptions pupils may have, such as believing AI is always a robot or that it can think and feel like a human. Teachers are supported in clarifying that AI is software, not a person—it works using data and algorithms, without feelings or consciousness.
This video is an overview for Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Computing Exploring AI unit. It prepares teachers to lead thoughtful, well-structured AI lessons, giving children the knowledge, skills and awareness they’ll need to understand and navigate the digital world ahead.
