Teacher video: Preparing for economic wellbeing in Year 6

This RSE & PSHE scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering the Year 6 economic wellbeing unit, designed to deepen pupils’ financial knowledge, prepare them for increasing independence, and support their transition into secondary school. It builds on prior learning about needs and wants, managing budgets, online spending risks, and career exploration.

The video outlines how pupils will develop a broader understanding of economic well-being, recognising it as encompassing income, employment, and access to resources that contribute to quality of life. They will explore a wide range of careers, linking their personal skills and interests to potential pathways, while also learning about responsibilities and expectations as they move into secondary school.

Lessons focus on practical financial skills such as managing money safely, both online and offline, and developing emotional resilience when dealing with different financial situations. Teachers are advised to approach sensitive topics with care, acknowledging pupils’ diverse financial backgrounds.

Later in the unit, pupils will examine the risks of gambling, including age-appropriate scenarios such as gaming platforms where purchases involve chance. The emphasis is on understanding the concept, recognising consequences, and promoting responsible attitudes without glamorising gambling.

The final lessons guide pupils to explore careers in various workplaces, examining the roles and responsibilities involved, and understanding the academic requirements of different routes. By linking aspirations to strengths and interests, children are empowered to think critically about their future, making this unit a valuable step in preparing for the transition to secondary school.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE – economic wellbeing teacher videos, supporting financial literacy, career awareness, and resilience in preparation for future opportunities.
