Exploring economic wellbeing in Year 5

This RSE & PSHE scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering the Year 5 economic wellbeing unit, designed to enhance pupils’ financial knowledge, build their understanding of money management, and explore a wide range of careers. It builds on previous learning about responsible spending, career influences, and workplace equality.

The video explains how pupils will develop skills in prioritising needs over wants, working with fictional budgets, and considering how different decisions affect the longevity of money. They will also encounter spending dilemmas and explore borrowing and loans, examining the responsibilities and consequences involved. Teachers are encouraged to create a supportive environment that respects diverse financial decisions without judgment.

Later lessons in the unit explore the risks of online spending, including in-app purchases, and encourage critical thinking about stereotypes in the workplace. Pupils will be guided to create action plans for challenging stereotypes and making positive commitments to inclusivity and equality.

The unit concludes with a focus on careers, helping pupils connect their interests and skills to possible future opportunities. This prepares them for more advanced discussions about financial literacy, decision-making, and career exploration in Year 6.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE – Year 5 Economic Wellbeing teacher videos, supporting responsible money management, equality in the workplace, and early career exploration.
