Introducing the Year 2 online safety unit

This Computing scheme of work video introduces the Year 2 Online safety unit, designed to help children build confidence and caution when navigating the digital world.

Across five lessons, pupils explore different aspects of online safety through practical tasks, discussion, and reflection. They learn what online information is, what’s safe to share, and how to protect themselves using strong passwords. The unit also supports children in recognising when something online affects their feelings, knowing who they can turn to for support, and understanding their rights around giving or denying permission to share content.

The unit addresses common misconceptions, such as the belief that child-friendly websites are always safe to share information on, or that saying no to permissions might have serious consequences. Pupils are reminded of the importance of age restrictions and are introduced to organisations that can offer help, as well as trusted adults. It ensures teachers feel supported in guiding pupils to use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly.
