Introducing AI
This Computing scheme of work video introduces teachers to the key knowledge pupils will explore in their first lesson on Artificial Intelligence. It supports pupils in understanding what AI is, how it works and how it is already shaping our world.
The lesson explains that AI is a type of technology designed to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence—such as recognising faces, understanding language or solving problems. Pupils learn that AI systems gather data from text, images and sensors, and use algorithms—sets of rules—to process this data and improve over time through machine learning.
Teachers are introduced to two main types of AI explored in the lesson: text-generated AI, which creates written responses based on learned language patterns, and image-generated AI, which creates or edits pictures using knowledge of shapes, colours and textures. Real-world applications, including chatbots, virtual assistants and medical imaging, help pupils understand the practical impact of these technologies.
The video also highlights common misconceptions, such as believing AI can think or feel, or that it can replace human decisions. Teachers are supported in clarifying that AI follows programmed instructions and that its accuracy depends on the quality of the data it is given.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Exploring AI unit. It equips teachers to confidently introduce the concept of AI, laying the foundations for ethical thinking, digital literacy and real-world understanding.
