Using art as a medium for communication
This archived Art and design scheme of work teacher video is part of a lesson in which pupils explore how art can be used to communicate powerful messages, as they develop both their visual and language literacy skills.
The video introduces the work of artist Jenny Holzer, who uses digital technology and text to create thought-provoking truisms that make strong visual statements. Inspired by this, pupils will develop their own message to share with others.
Once pupils have chosen their message, they will consider how best to present it visually so that the design reflects the meaning of the words. They will think about font, layout and placement to make their message stand out. Pupils will then select a supporting image that reinforces their chosen message. They can edit their image to strengthen the overall effect. Finally, the completed truisms are displayed as a rolling slideshow, echoing Jenny Holzer’s earlier installations. By bringing all the messages together, pupils’ words can be shared with the wider school community showcasing the power of art as a message.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s archived Year 6 Photography unit. It helps pupils explore how creativity and communication can inspire others and make an impact.
